Commanding General 28th Infantry Division (Mechanized)
Brigadier General John T. von Trott assumed duties as Deputy Commanding General, Maneuver, 28th Infantry Division (Mechanized) Pennsylvania Army National Guard, 1 November 1998. As Deputy Commander, he oversees the operations, readiness, and training of the three combat maneuver brigades and the aviation brigade, as well as serving as second-in-command of the entire division.
The General’s military career began with his being commissioned a second lieutenant, Regular Army, in 1967, a Distinguished Military Graduate of Army ROTC. Initially assigned to the First Armored Division, he served as a platoon leader, executive officer and commander of Company C, 2d Battalion, 81st Armor.
In 1969 he was reassigned to the 3rd Squadron, 11th Armored Calvary, then stationed in the Republic of Vietnam, where he served as a platoon leader, cavalry troop commander and squadron staff officer. Upon leaving active duty in 1971, he joined the U.S. Army Reserve as Operations Officer for the157th Separate Infantry Brigade (Mechanized). In 1976, General von Trott transferred to the Pennsylvania Army National Guard. He was assigned first as Director of Services and then as Executive Officer of the 213th Area Support Group, which, in addition to its wartime mission, provides command and control to the non-divisional elements of the PAARNG. From 1985 to 1988, he commanded the 213th Group and deployed it overseas numerous times for participation in NATO operations. In 1989 he was assigned as Chief of Mobilization and Readiness; then from 1991 to 1998, as Director of Plans, Operations, Training and Military Support for the entire Pennsylvania Army National Guard.
