From
The Command Track By Allen
Hathaway, President The 26th annual reunion was held on August
17-21 in People began arriving early in the week to take advantage of sightseeing opportunities. Registration officially opened on Wednesday and many were on hand to pick up their reunion packets. The “bunker” opened and the crowd begin to filter in to meet up with old friends. The “bunker” is the size of the banquet room. Unit guidons are placed on tables throughout the bunker to make it easy to locate your unit. As the room began to fill troopers were seen with pictures, scrap books, newspaper articles and many other mementoes. Once again our Historian, Don Snedeker, prepared several display boards of newspaper articles tracing the history of the regiment. A few large scale maps showing the Blackhorse A/O were also on display. Many were seen gathered around the history boards reading the history they helped write. Thursday was the 20th annual Marty Ognibene Golf Tournament. This is always a fun event for troopers, wives and friends. More attendees continued to arrive throughout the day. Many others took the opportunity to visit the Gateway Arch, just a short walk from the hotel. Some even dared to ride to the top of the arch to enjoy the view. I heard it was breathtaking. On Friday morning we held our annual Veterans
Seminar. This years topic was “PTSD and the Vietnam Veteran”,
This was an excellent presentation by Dr. Candace Drake of
the VA Gulf Coast Health Care System in More attendees arrived on Friday. By that evening the large banquet room used for the “bunker party” was full and bustling with activity. The silent auction was also held on Friday evening. This is always a fun and interesting part of the reunion. Over 100 items were on display this year and available for bid. The Annual Business Meeting was held on
Saturday morning where we reported on the state of the organization.
Elections were held, the results of which are printed
elsewhere in this issue. The
membership chose Chaplain Larry Haworth conducted the memorial service on Saturday afternoon. The names of departed Blackhorse troopers who have passed away since the last reunion were read. Members of the audience had the opportunity to speak about friends or loved ones lost this past year. The Saturday evening banquet and program are the highlights of the reunion. We would like to thank our guest speaker, Major General William L. (Bill) Nash (USA Ret), for his excellent remarks. As a lieutenant he served as a platoon leader with A Troop in 1969-1970. We would also like to thank the current regimental commander COL Tony Aguto and RCSM Clinton Reiss for attending the reunion and giving an update on the activities of the regiment. They included an outstanding video mixing scenes of the regiment from the past and the present. A total of 60 troopers attended their first reunion. These “first timers” were asked to stand and received a “welcome home” round of applause from the audience. Many of them commented afterward that they waited far too long to attend a reunion. Also attending was Mr. Arthur Bass who served with the 11th Cavalry during World War II. The Saturday evening program was topped off by
the Blackhorse Salute. This
is always a very powerful and sometimes emotional portion of the
program as we salute the service of the thousands of Blackhorse
troopers who served with this great regiment in We especially want to thank the many Blackhorse troopers, family and friends who attend and support these great events. It’s your participation that make these reunions so successful year after year. We’re headed for |
