Brief statements from 55 of our 2021 Scholarship Winners.

Hunter Monson

I deeply thank you for the 11th ACVVC Scholarship award. It is humbling and a great honor, knowing that American heroes like my grandfather and all of you who fought and sacrificed for our country 50 years ago, are making this scholarship possible today.  I am a new freshman at the University of FIorida and am planning to pursue a medical career. This scholarship is tremendously helpful as I begin this long academic process. I will be forever grateful to the 11th ACVVC for your support and, most of all, for your sacrifices and service to our country.

I am extremely grateful to have received the 11th Armored Cavalry’s Veterans of Vietnam and Cambodia scholarship award. Being awarded this scholarship means that I will be able to alleviate some of my college expenses which will be extremely helpful to my family and I as I attend Cornell University this Fall. Thank you again for awarding me such an amazing and meaningful scholarship.

This scholarship from the 11th Cav. means the world to me and my family. I plan to honor them by double majoring in ASL and Interpreting at St. Catherine University and to use my degree to serve my communities and try to make the world a more accessible place.  My Grandpa recommended that I apply for this scholarship and I want to sincerely thank him, all the members of the 11th Armored Cavalry Veterans of Vietnam and Cambodia and the scholarship committee for this award. To be selected for this scholarship means so much to me but even more to my grandpa. I was so excited to receive the email about the great news, the first thing I did was call him. I don’t apply for many scholarships but I am glad I applied to the 11thACVVC scholarship due to the meaning behind it. This scholarship will help me with my college expenses as I intend to become a nurse in my future. I would love to thank all of the veterans for their service and to the ones that could not be here today. I am extremely grateful for my grandpa and all of the amazing things he has sacrificed for not only me but for this country as well. I wish everyone could meet him, but since that may not be possible I can say I am one lucky granddaughter. Thank you again for selecting me as one of the recipients for this scholarship, it means a lot!

Joshua Clabbers

Earning this scholarship is special to me because my grandfather fought and served with the men that this fund commemorates. Growing up, I did not at first understand the struggles surrounding Vietnam veterans, both during the war and after. I’m happy to say now, through the education that this scholarship funds, I’ve been able to learn much more, and gain more appreciation for the stories that my grandfather has spoken of. Thank you to all Veterans that served. To those that lost their lives, your legacy lives on by providing students like me with the opportunity to keep remembering history.

Thank you very much,

Joshua Clabbers, grandson of Richard Crabbs, B Troop 1/11, 1967-1968

Kiefer Earl

I am truly blessed to be a representative of the 11th Armored Cavalry's Veterans of Vietnam & Cambodia scholarship. I would first like to recognize my late grandfather Larry Earl, a Purple Heart recipient, for serving his country exceptionally well. Without his duty, this would not have been possible. Though he passed away when I was young and I did not know him too well, I have heard many stories of his time in Vietnam and how admirable he was as a man. I know how much this award would mean to him and I have already witnessed the emotional effect it has had on my family. It is genuinely exhilarating. I also want to thank my family for keeping Larry's memory alive and for supporting me the way they have. To receive this scholarship is an honor and it will play an important role in my studies at Purdue University. I am forever grateful for the 11th ACVVC.

Sincerely,

Kiefer Earl, grandson of Larry Earl, L Troop 3/11, 1969-1970

This scholarship means so much to me as I have always looked up to my grandfather as a role model. His example has guided me through life, and to be honored with this award commemorating him and the other veterans of Vietnam and Cambodia is truly gratifying. However this honor can't be shared with me alone, I would never have gotten here without my family guiding me and supporting my path through life. Neither can they get all the credit for, in Boy Scouts I learned how to lead, communicate, navigate, and so much more. Truly without all of these supporting factors I would have never reached this point, so I am honored to have received this scholarship and all the meaning behind it.

He was proud to have served with the "Black Horse" through these many years making the award of this scholarship very significant to him and therefore; to me.

It is such an honor to be given the 11th ACVVC scholarship. When I applied for this scholarship, I did so in honor of my late grandfather, Clarence ‘Cactus’ Branham. My grandfather was not just a hero to our country, he was a hero and a treasure to anyone who had the pleasure of knowing him. I know he is looking down on me and is proud of the woman I have become and would be thrilled to know I have been given this generous scholarship. The 11th ACVVC scholarship will help me in continuing my education at Eastern Michigan University as I work towards my degree in social work. My long term goal is to work in the mental health field, more specifically specializing in trauma, PTSD and veteran care. It is with great appreciation that I write this and thank the 11th ACVVC for helping me in achieving my dream of becoming a social worker. Also, a special thank you to all of the 11th ACVVC for having served for our country.

This scholarship has potentially opened so many more doors for me that I couldn’t have entered otherwise.
Thank you so much for your service,

11th Armored Cavalry: I want to start off by saying thank you so much for this scholarship as well as to those who have served our country. This scholarship means so much to me in a way that cannot be explained. It means accomplishment, self-satisfaction, and belief in myself. It means that all of my hard work throughout 12 years of school has paid off, and I am ready to start new adventures. Thank you again!!!!

Katherine Sturley

My name is Katherine Sturley and I am honored to receive the 11th ACVVC scholarship award. I am pursuing an accelerated second-degree for a bachelor of science in nursing. I have two daughters that are now grown and off to college. My eldest is at the University of Detroit Mercy also pursuing a bachelors in nursing and my youngest daughter will be attending University of Michigan School of Engineering. While I do not know exactly what area of nursing I will be going into, I do know I would like to work with veterans, possibly in hospice care. I am very proud of my father’s service and dedication. I am honored to receive this scholarship in commemoration of John Shank who served as a trooper in the 11th Cavalry Regiment in Southeast Asia.

Katarina Rodriguez Thomas

I am beyond grateful and honored to have received the 11th Armored Cavalry Veterans of Vietnam and Cambodia Scholarship. This scholarship is incredibly meaningful to me, as it allows me to honor my grandfather, who fought bravely in the 11th Cavalry during the Vietnam War, and has helped shape me into the person I am today. With this scholarship, I will be able to pursue my college dreams in an International Business and Public Policy program that will hopefully lead to my being able to serve our country through diplomatic work in the future. It means the world to me to be a winner of this scholarship, and I want to thank the 11th Armored Cavalry Veterans for their generosity in providing people like me with an opportunity to use this money to follow their dreams.

Thank you so much again for this incredible honor!

Emma Whitlock

My name is Emma Whitlock, and I am honored to be one of the recipients of the 2021 11th Armored Cavalry’s Veterans of Vietnam and Cambodia Scholarship Award. I am so appreciative and filled with gratitude to be chosen as a recipient this year. I would like to thank my Papa (James Yunker) for his service, and I thank all the other brave soldiers for fighting for our country during times of need. It is truly selfless to risk your life daily to provide protection for family, friends, and all other citizens back home, and that is exactly what these soldiers did. This money will help me follow my dreams to study in the field of science during college to pursue my dream career of being a surgeon.

Ally Willis

I am honored to receive this scholarship. My grandfather was in the 11th Armored Cavalry and passed away in March, so he never got to see me graduate or even hear my final college decision. This scholarship is a reminder to myself that he is still watching over me and to not take his service for granted. I plan to use this scholarship to help pay for my Civil Engineering degree at Purdue University. I am thankful for this opportunity and all who served to make it possible.

Thank you for selecting me. I am incredibly honored.

Kaleigh Wilson

My name is Kaleigh Wilson and I am beyond thankful to have been chosen for this scholarship award. This scholarship means a lot to me because it honors the veterans of the 11th Armored Cavalry and my grandfather was a proud member. He sadly passed away when I was young, so receiving this scholarship has made me feel like I get to honor him and make sure that his legacy continues. He would also be very proud and I know he is cheering me on from above. I would like to thank each of the members for their service and for allowing this scholarship to happen, along with honoring members that were KIA.
